There you go again!

Murder vs. Crime rate: While robbers were invading residents' homes right and left and thugs were holding up tourists in the French Quarter, Mayor Mitch Landrieu was holding a "crime summit."

But what he was concerned about was not those crimes which affect you and me, he was worried about the murder rate--the problem, for the most part, of young black boys killing other black boys.

He repeats an age-old gaffe: mistaking the murder rate for the crime rate. Murder, of course, is a crime. But unless you're a young black male, your chances of getting killed in this city are probably no greater than in any other city.

But it is the negative publicity about the number of homicides in New Orleans that puts Mayor Mitch on edge--because it may affect tourism.

Mitch, how about worrying about those of us who live here, that we can safely sit in our homes and not have a robber barge in, that we can walk down Bourbon Street without getting clobbered or robbed.

Those are the things we call crime and should be listed in the "crime rate" that affects us all.

Here's what we call crime: While Mayor Mitch was assailing murder last week, here's what assailants were doing to us:
  • Thursday (9.15.11) 7:55 p.m.: A 32-year-old white man walking on St. Ann Street near Bourbon Street was accosted by 3 black thugs who forced him to give up his cellphone.
The victim, for whatever reason, was unable to give police a detailed description of the robbers.
  • Friday (9.16.11) 2:30 a.m.: A 34-year-old black woman walking on S. Peters Street near Canal Street was set upon by 6 black chicks who emerged from a white compact car and began pummeling her with their shoes. They took the victim's purse and got back in the car and sped off.
The victim described 2 of her assailants as 25 years old, both 5'7" tall, one weighing 220 pounds with short hair, the other 265 pounds; the third was in her early 20's, 5'4" tall, weighing 115 pounds with long black hair; the other 3 were nondescript.

And all of them in a compact car?
  • Friday (9.16.11) 10:45 p.m.: A 31-year-old white woman walking on Bourbon Street near St. Louis Street had her purse snatched by a black hoodlum who pulled it from her grasp.
He was described as 20 to 30 years old, 5'7" tall, with a slim build, wearing a black T-shirt and black pants.
  • Sunday (9.18.11) 5:57 a.m.: Two Hispanic women, one 41 years old, who were walking to their car on St. Ann Street near N. Rampart Street were held up by a gun-wielding black punk who stuck the gun in one of the women's back and relieved one of her cellphone and the other of her purse.
The one who lost her purse refused to give the police any information, including her age, before returning to Metairie, fearing she might be deported.

The other victim, who lost her cellphone, described the robber as 30 years old, 5'11" tall, with a slim build, wearing a white dress shirt.
  • Sunday (9.18.11) 11:28 p.m.: A 27-year-old white woman walking near Magazine and Poydras streets had her purse pulled from her grasp by a black dude who tried to get away down Poydras on foot.
Police caught Drexler Johnson, 23, and charged him with pursesnatching. He is being held in OPP on $20,000 bond and for the U.S. Marshals who want him for prison escape.

If Mayor Mitch really wants to fight crime, he ought to find a way to get 8th District Det. Willie Jenkins some help. Det. Jenkins was the lead detective on ALL of the above cases. If you have any information that could help this overworked detective solve any of the cases, email him at wjenkins@nola.gov.

Let sleeping dogs lie: One bum hanging out in Cabrini Dog Park apparently forgot that adage when he tried to rob another bum there last Wednesday (9.21.11) shortly after 9 a.m. and got carved up pretty badly.

When police arrived at 917 Barracks St., across from the park at Barracks and Dauphine streets, they found Chisesi Simpson, a 47-year-old black convicted felon, sitting on the steps, bleeding profusely. They also found a black bag with 2 cellphones in it and other items.

Simpson was hauled to the hospital and detectives went over to the park to try to figure out what happened. A neighbor told the detective bums gathered in the park to charge their cellphones from an extension cord that dangled from the ceiling of the open-air shelter at the park's entrance on Dauphine.

There they found a drunken white fella, Armond Enfinger, 59, sleeping under the shelter and woke him up. Though he had specs of blood on him, he told police he didn't know how they got there. He did tell detectives, though, that he and his black buddy had been sitting near another white guy, later identified as Jasper Harden, 39, and when Simpson saw Harden's cellphone, he told Enfinger, "I'm gonna take everything he got."

Harden told cops he stopped at the park because he was too drunk to ride his bicycle anymore and wanted to charge his cellphone. While his cellphone was charging he fell asleep, only to awake to find Simpson digging through his pants pockets. When he asked Simpson what was going on, Simpson replied, "I ain't doing nothing."

Fearing for his safety, Harden pulled a knife from his pocket and began backing away. That's when Simpson lunged at him from 3 or 4 feet away, Harden told police, and he instinctively swung his knife from right to left and cut Simpson on his inner right forearm.

Police deemed Harden, on probation for a domestic abuse conviction this past spring, the victim and not the aggressor, so didn't charge him.

They did determine the phones in the black bag they found near Simpson on Barracks belonged to Harden. An officer went to the hospital and issued a summons to Simpson for theft, assault, and possession of stolen property.

You would think
the police would patrol this neighborhood oasis better if it's a bunkhouse for armed felons. Or if you're going to the dog park, leave little Fifi at home and take your Doberman.

Two's enough: A timely tip to CrimeStoppers resulted in the arrest of Jacob O. Lee (pictured), 30, last Sunday (9.18.11) for the armed robbery of a Bourbon Street cafe and a Frenchmen Street deli.

The tip led cops to a residence in New Orleans East where they found Lee and Keith Holmes, 21. Lee was charged with 2 counts of armed robbery and police said Holmes--who may or may not have been Lee's getaway driver in one of the robberies--was also taken in on a warrant.

Lee is being held on $500,000 bond in OPP and Holmes, curiously, isn't in OPP though he was wanted on a $20,000 capias for failing to pay fines last May following his guilty plea to a charge of illegally carrying a weapon.

Cops don't seem to know what happened to him; according to court records, he's still "at large."

Lee was charged in the armed robbery of the Candy Bar cafe, 908 Bourbon St., on 9.9.11 and the robbery of the Frenchmen Deli & Grocery, 602 Frenchmen St., on 9.12.11.

Bad man at large: An arrest warrant was issued 9.16.11 for the arrest of Melvin Miguel, 23, who is believed to have attempted one armed robbery in the French Quarter and is being investigated in connection with other recent Quarter robberies as well.

Police believe Miguel is the guy who tried to rob a 46-year-old Asian woman of her purse on 9.9.11 while she was walking around 4:40 a.m. in the 600 block of Iberville Street. The suspect attempted to pull the victim’s purse from her grasp, but she resisted. The suspect then produced a handgun and demanded the purse. The victim refused and the suspect fled into the passenger side of a light colored 4-door vehicle which drove on Iberville toward Decatur, then unknown.

Soon after the car took off, a citizen noticed that a driver was acting suspiciously, so he wrote down the license plate of the car and called police with the information.

Through investigation, Det. Michael Flores found that the vehicle was registered to an acquaintance of Miguel’s, and that Miguel was most likely the gunman in the attempted armed robbery.

Flores secured an arrest warrant for Miguel for one count of attempted armed robbery as well as a search warrant for Miguel’s home in the 5000 block of Spain Street. When searching the house, detectives found bullets for a 9MM handgun as well as clothing similar to that described by the victim of the attempted armed robbery.

Miguel is currently on probation for possession of cocaine until 2015. He has additional previous convictions for access card device fraud. He has also been arrested in the past for aggravated battery, aggravated kidnapping and armed robbery with a firearm felon with a firearm, trespassing, attempted simple escape, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, use of a CDS in the presence of a minor.

His possible involvement in other robberies earlier this month in and around the Quarter is still under investigation.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5’08”, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and white pants. If you believe you’ve seen Miguel or if you know where he is, call CrimeStoppers at 822-1111 and cash in on the reward.

Shocking! A bad girl: Cops busted a 14-year-old girl accused of using an stun gun to steal a fellow high-school student's smartphone.

Lenika Vanburen, who threatened another female by turning a stun gun on and off, was charged with simple robbery. (Not armed robbery?)

The robbery happened in the 400 block of Canal Street when Vanburen and a group of other teenagers confronted a high school student who was walking and talking on her smartphone on 8.19.11 around 7:15 p.m.

Cops arrested little Lenika at her home in eastern New Orleans 9.7.11, but "her parents refused to allow police to question her," police reported. (Wouldn't want to traumatize her because of criminal behavior, now would we?)

Stick'em up...way up!

Lull's over: After only 13 robberies in the last 6 weeks, all hell broke loose last Friday (9.9.11) and the French Quarter was victimized 11 times in just 4 days through Monday (9.12.11).

It happens that way sometimes. But while the high muckety-mucks in the city were busying themselves with the academics of crime (Times-Picayune headlines on just one page on one day this week: "FBI agents placed in internal affairs unit", "Culture change ordered at NOPD", "Anti-crime summit planned"), citizens of the city's most prestigious neighborhood suffered over and over again. Not a word on what the NOPD planned to do about that.

(Suggestion: Get out of those press conferences and get out on the streets. It's been a long time since I've seen cops patrolling my patch of paradise.)

Here's what's gone down in the past week:
  • Friday (9.9.11) 1:30 a.m.: A black dude, oblivious to the security cameras in the Candy Bar cafe, 908 Bourbon St., posed first as a customer before pulling a silver-and-black-colored semi-automatic handgun and demanded money from the store clerk. She gave him cash from the register and he fled on foot up the street--but not before leaving numerous images on the cameras, including video of the robbery.
The robber was described as about 40 years old, 6' tall, with a medium build, brown complexion, and short dark hair, wearing a green polo-style shirt, gray shorts and white tennis shoes.

If you have any information about this crime, contact 8th District Det. Michael Flores at Mflores@nola.gov.
  • Friday (9.9.11) 4:40 a.m.: A 46-year-old Asian lady walking in the 600 block of Iberville Street (between Chartres and Royal streets) thwarted a would-be robber who first tried to grab her purse, and when she resisted, pulled a pistol. She continued to put up a fight and he fled in a light-colored 4-door sedan that sped toward Decatur Street.
The assailant was described as black, 5'8" tall, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and white pants.
  • Friday (9.9.11) 4:45 a.m.: An 18-year-old white girl walking near Bienville and Burgundy streets willingly gave up her purse to a black thug who jumped out of a light-colored 4-door sedan armed with a pistol, just minutes after he was rebuffed by the Asian woman on Iberville.
The robber, who escaped in the car while fled toward N. Rampart Street, was described as 25 to 30 years old, with short hair, wearing a white T-shirt and dark-colored jeans.
  • Friday (9.9.11) 5:50 a.m.: A 73-year-old white gentleman was accosted at Carondelet and Gravier streets by a black thug who hopped out of a blue or green-colored sedan brandishing a handgun and demanding the man's briefcase. The victim refused and fled.
The perp was described as 5'10" tall, with a slim build, wearing a green shirt and dark-colored pants.
  • Friday (9.9.11) 10:00 p.m.: A 34-year-old white guy, who was apparently already out of it at that early hour, was robbed in the 900 block of St. Louis Street (between Dauphine and Burgundy streets) of his wallet by a knife-wielding bandit.
He was unable to tell cops which way the robber fled or give them a physical description of the perp.
  • Saturday (9.10.11) 4:00 a.m.: A 28-year-old Hispanic fella, walking in an "unknown location" that police believe was the 600 block or so of Bourbon Street, approached 3 black guys to ask for directions back to his hotel. Instead, one of them knocked the tourist to the ground and lifted the victim's money from his pocket.
According to the police report, "The victim then walked to Tulane Hospital." (How'd he know where the hospital was if he didn't know where his hotel was? Go figure.)

The robber was described as 24 to 25 years old, 5'9" tall, weighing 170 to 180 pounds, with short hair, wearing a white T-shirt and black shorts.
  • Saturday (9.10.11) 5:30 a.m.: A 25-year-old white woman walking in the 1000 block of Bienville Street near Burgundy Street was robbed of her purse. She noticed a white Ford Expedition driving extremely slow on Bienville. When she reached the middle of the block, she turned around and saw a black thug running toward her. He demanded her purse and when she refused, he pulled a black-colored handgun and pointed it at her, which changed her mind.
The robber, fleeing on foot toward Burgundy, was spotted carrying a large purse by a citizen driving up Burgundy, who followed the fleeing felon until he hopped into the white Ford Expedition at Conti Street. The Expedition took off down Conti to Dauphine Street, and then turned toward Canal Street.

The robber was described as 5'7" tall, with a heavy build, medium complexion, and shoulder-length dreadlocks, wearing a red shirt, possibly a jersey, with khaki shorts.

The vehicle the police are searching for is a white 1999 Ford Expedition, with dark tinted windows and a factory-installed luggage rack, bearing Georgia license plate AWX 6860.

8th District Det. John Ball managed to retrieve 3 high-definition photographs from a local business's surveillance camera that were taken shortly before the robbery. If you have any information on this case, contact Det. Ball at jball@nola.gov.
  • Sunday (9.11.11) 1:00 a.m.: A 23-year-old white chick was walking and talking near Conti and Dauphine streets when a black dude ran up and ripped the iPhone out of her hand.
(Sounds like she talks, but doesn't listen. How many times have we warned of the dangers of talking on a cellphone rather than paying attention to your surroundings? Obviously not enough for this bimbo.)

The robber was described as in his mid-20's, 5'9" tall, with short hair, wearing a white T-shirt and dark-colored jeans.
  • Monday (9.12.11) 4:50 a.m.: A 25-year-old woman walking near Barracks and Burgundy streets was robbed by an armed black punk who demanded her purse. He fled on Barracks toward the river.
He is described as 20 years old, 5'8" tall, with a medium build and short hair, wearing a plaid shirt and light-colored pants.
  • Monday (9.12.11) 7:50 a.m.: The Clothespin laundry, 840 N. Rampart St., was robbed by a Hispanic dude who asked to use the restroom. When the cashier denied him, he pulled out a handgun and demanded money. The cashier complied and he fled on foot out the backdoor.
The little pipsqueak is described as 20 to 35 years old, 5'6" tall, weighing 160 pounds, wearing a white tank top.
  • Monday (9.12.11) 8:50 p.m.: The Frenchmen Deli & Grocery, 602 Frenchmen St. (near Chartres Street), was robbed at gunpoint by a black thug who got away in a blue or silver-colored station wagon while an untold number of people congregated on the busy street.
The robber was described as 5'7" to 5'10" tall, with short hair, wearing a white a white shirt.

Why all these robberies? Why now? Hard to say. But one or two things stand out:
  • The vague descriptions of the perps given by the victims can probably be attributed to the hour the robberies occurred and the condition of the victims at that hour (most of the robberies were between 4 and 6 a.m.).
If you're going to be out carousing until 4 or 5 a.m., why not just have another drink before heading home when the sun come up?
  • Pay attention to cars driving by whose occupants might be sizing you up as a potential victim. Make a mental note of the vehicle's make and color. Jot down the license number if you can--just doing that will signal to the driver that you're aware of what he's up to.

Murderers, rapists, public officials...oh, my

Just about when I think it's time for NOcrimeline to report "over and out" because it seems like crime's been busted in the French Quarter and the populace has become complacent, here comes reports of a murderer and rapist running loose, and a public official running over a citizen.

Murderer on the run: I don't know about you, but if there's a murderer out there running loose in the French Quarter, I'd like to know about it.

It seems the police developed a lead rather quickly on a suspect in the murder of a German tourist from Florida whose decomposed corpse had been found in the bushes in Armstrong Park on 8.11.11. Her neck had been slashed with a knife and police believe it happened 8.7.11 after she was last seen holding a suitcase on the corner of Toulouse and N. Rampart streets around 10:30 p.m., then reportedly met her attacker while having a drink in a bar there. An eyewitness reported seeing them walking later on Basin Street, near where her body was found in the park.

Based on a tip, an 8th District officer patrolling near Toulouse and N. Rampart a couple of days later saw a black man who resembled the earlier description. When he attempted to stop the suspect, the man pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at the officer. As he ran from the officer, he stumbled and fell, dropping what turned out to be a pellet gun, before continuing to run down N. Rampart toward Armstrong Park where back-up officers apprehended him at St. Ann Street.

Talk about returning to the scene of the crime. Officers charged Tomarcus Porter, 23, with aggravated assault and booked him into Central Lock-Up on 8.13.11. He was there under a $15,000 bond when a tip to police identified Porter, a registered sex offender from Arkansas, as a suspect and DNA from under the victim's fingernails matched Porter's. He was booked on 8.26.11 with second-degree murder and is now being held on $500,000 bond.

Homicide Det. Brandon Ludwig--a former 8th District patrolman--is credited with solving the case. But, hey detective, next time there's a murderer in our midst and you've got a clue as to what he looks like, how about having the NOPD alert us. We might be able to help you spot him--or at least protect ourselves from him.

Rapist snared by science: You might say Anthony J. Montecino Jr., 32, is a victim of modern science and technology.

First, a video surveillance camera caught him--or someone who looked an awfully lot like him--robbing an older gentleman walking on Canal Street near the Ritz-Carlton on 4.14.11. Three days later, 8th District Det. Michael Flores, after viewing the video, busted Montecino for simple robbery.

While Montecino was languishing in OPP on $15,000 bond, the NOPD (under Criminal Investigations Division Cmdr. Paul Noel, another 8th District alumnus) finally got funding to test a backlog of rape kits. It wasn't long before Cmdr. Noel had his first hit: Montecino.

DNA linked him to a rape in August of last year near N. Broad and Iberville streets, and to one in February of this year at the Roosevelt Hotel.

Montecino was indicted 8.25.11 on one count of aggravated rape and one of forcible rape. That upped his bond to $2 million.

And, Montecino, who is no stranger to crime, is believed to be the same Anthony Montecino who was arrested in April last year as an accessory after the fact to second-degree murder of a LaPlace crack whore in 2008 whose body was torched in a vacant lot.

How he got out of jail on a $210,000 bond for that is known only to St. John The Baptist Parish officials.

Some emergency: The Jefferson Parish emergency management director must has forgotten he was in New Orleans and not Metairie.

In a dispute over a parking place in front of 1215 Decatur St. on 8.14.11 around noon, Raphael G. "Ray" Meyers Sr. insisted on pulling into the space Kim Perilloux was standing in to save for her husband.

Perilloux, who owns a store on that block, refused to budge; Meyers refused to stop backing into the space. According to the police report, the car's right rear tire rolled over Perilloux's foot. Perilloux went to the hospital; Meyers went to jail for aggravated battery.

Meyers couldn't say he wasn't treated well like a visiting dignitary.

Magistrate Harry Cantrell gave him a "Get Out of Jail Free" card that sprung him from Central Lock-Up on his own recognizance rather than making him post a $5,000 bond.

8th District Cmdr. Jeffrey Walls tried covering up the incident the best he could. Though he released written reports of 2 other aggravated battery cases that Sunday in the French Quarter, there was no report published on Meyers' mishap.

Root of Canal's woes: Another gang of teenagers who seem to be candidates for retroactive abortions staged another episode of terror on Canal Street on a recent Friday afternoon.

According to one eyewitness, as many as 100 kids were milling about near McDonald's in the 900 block about 4:30 p.m. on 8.26.11. Sensing they were up to no good, he called the NOPD. Officers arrived, dispersed the crowd, and left.

No sooner had the cops left the scene than 3 young black punks in a late-model gold-colored Mercedes-Benz SUV rounded the corner around 5 p.m. and blasted 5 gunshots into those who lingered.

They wounded a 17-year-old boy--who was not the intended target--in the leg; he was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Not long after, the Mercedes was found at Leonides and Eagle streets engulfed in flames.

Ordinary every-day crimes: Not all crimes in the French Quarter lately have been so dramatic--unless you were the victim:
  • Sunday (8.21.11) 11:15 p.m.: A 48-year-old white man walking near near Burgundy Street and Esplanade Avenue was accosted by another white guy who demanded his money. Even after he complied, the robber struck him and fled on foot.
The robber was described as 25 to 35 years old, with sandy brown hair, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and khaki shorts.
  • Monday (8.22.11) 9 a.m.: A 42-year-old white woman walking on St. Louis Street near N. Rampart Street when her purse was snatched by 2 men.
One of the suspects was black with a light complexion, and the other was Hispanic.
  • Friday (8.26.11) 12:09 a.m.: A 28-year-old black woman was walking near Dauphine and Frenchmen streets when her purse was snatched by a white guy who fled on Dauphine toward Elysian Fields Avenue.
He was described as 6'1" tall, with a muscular build, bald, wearing green shorts and no shirt.
  • Friday (8.26.11) 11:30 p.m.: A 33-year-old white man walking on Burgundy near Esplanade was hit in the head and knocked unconscious by an assailant he didn't see. When he awoke his wallet was missing.
Say, didn't this just happen the Sunday before at the same place at about the same time?
  • Saturday (8.27.11) 2:40 a.m.: A 23-year-old black man standing near Dauphine and St. Louis streets got into an argument with another black dude who pulled a knife and threatened him.
The suspect was described as 5'10" tall, weighing 170 pounds, with short salt-and-pepper hair.
  • Saturday (8.27.11) 5:05 a.m.: Louis Robinson, 23--who apparently couldn't leave well-enough alone--was arrested less than 5 hours after he was let out of OPP after Judge Karen Herman gave him a 3-year suspended sentence when he pled guilty to battery.
Back in drag and back in the French Quarter, Robinson allegedly snatched the purse of a 48-year-old Florida woman on Bourbon Street.

Cops nabbed him as he fled on Dumaine Street and charged him with pursesnatching. He is in OPP on $35,000 bond.
  • Wednesday (8.31.11) 12:15 a.m.: A black dude got into an argument with a 27-year-old stripper in Little Darlings, 411 Bourbon St., and grabbed her tip bag from her hand and ran off.
Police issued an arrest warrant for Renard DeCarlos, 40, but gave no description of him.
